May 31, 2010

It's Memorial Day and the neighbor does not disappoint. Along with all the flags and stars, there's an "Uncle Sam on stilts" in the front yard. There's also a small figure on top of the hedge who appears to be a leprechaun at first until you look more closely and realize he's supposed to be a soldier...looks more like a British doughboy than an American soldier, but it's the thought that counts.

With Armed Forces Day in the rear-view mirror, all he had to do was switch out the lettering. Watch out folks: Memorial Day is coming!

It's Armed Forces Day! I was only able to get this nighttime photo, but you can see everything pretty clearly.

Like I said, the blank canvas wouldn't last long. Armed Forces Day is on its way. If you're anything like me, you had to look it up. I'll save you the trouble. It's the third Saturday in May. That makes it May 15 this year.

Here's a rare shot of the yard without any decorations. Don't worry, it won't last long.

May 1, 2010

And not surprisingly, we begin May with "Mother's Day Coming". Take note of something, though: He seems to use a very limited number of designs over the course of the year. Anything patriotic gets American flags. Some of the big holidays have their own decorations. For minor holidays, especially those without any specific images associated with them, he will always use the shamrocks. Therefore, Mother's Day gets shamrocks, and I bet Father's Day will too.

Since the May 1 photo is hard to see with all the sun glare, here's May 2. You can clearly see all the decorations, including the "Mother" sign with the angels...I think that means his mother has passed away.

April 30, 2010

The big day has arrived and the "Something Big" is to be revealed! I woke up this morning to find a new message on the yard: "Dollar Sweepstakes Today"

I have no idea what this means. There's a folding chair to the left of the message with another handwritten sign on white posterboard: "Holland Dollar Sweepstakes at 1:00pm"

That's a little more informative, but the best guess I have is that he's giving away cash money at 1:00. I'll be at work, so I won't be able to witness the magic, but I race home after work to see if I can catch anything. No luck. By the time I get home all the decorations have been taken down and he's working on his next display.

Maybe next year?

April 25, 2010

Not much has changed over the past week or so. It's still "Something Big Coming" with a countdown, currently at 5. But today a little handwritten sign went up next to the countdown. It does little to explain what's going on, in fact it only makes me more curious as to what in the world "Something Big" is. The sign says: "I will tell you April 30 at 1:00pm." Gutted! April 30 is a Friday, so I'll be at work when the big unveil happens. I'll have to catch it as best I can.
